185: SFFCH – Santa With Muscles [1996]

186 Santa with Muscles

Merry Wrestle-Mas, to one and all! Our very special Spoiler Filled festive tradition continues for year 3 and this time it’s the main man himself: “Hollywood” Hulk Hogan. Much like his wrestling career beforehand, he much utilize his great charisma to mask his general lack of ability in 1996’s Santa With Muscles, where he plays an amnesiac douche-bag millionaire who is convinced he is Santa and must save the local orphanage from closure. Now if you think that all sounds a little bit schmaltzy and cliché then you have no idea! So come and listen to us ‘enjoy’ this yuletide spectacle as we discuss: the film’s child logic, 60’s Batman Villains, bondage Santas, how a young Mila Kunis is somehow the best actor of the bunch and how the magic of Christmas is explained away through explosive, electric crystals.

184: SFFCH – The Lawnmower Man [1992]

185 The Lawnmower Man

We hope your minds are like clean, hungry sponges this week listeners because we are tackling 90’s cult ‘classic’ The Lawnmower Man. Was it a movie ahead of it time with it’s cutting edge, 1992 computer graphics and prophetic sci-fi or were it’s lofty ambitions just too far out of reach? Either way, come and join our entertaining discussions of such fodder as: Pierce Brosnan’s topless scientist, taking the term mindf@#k a little too literally, giant golden heads and how it is both the most and least faithful Stephen King adaptation at the same time.

183: SFFCH – Looker [1981]

182 Looker

Who knew Michael Crichton had such a…uh…’prolific’ film career. Well, before the Nineties wanted to make big budget movies from any book of his they could get their hands on, he was making his own films. This week at Spoiler Filled, we delve into his 1981 effort Looker, a film about media influences, mind control, 80’s synth, neon lights, overly complicated acronyms, flashy sci-fi concepts and probably the greatest excuse for being constantly surrounded by semi-nude, attractive female models.

180: SFFCH – Nochnoy Dozor a.k.a Night Watch [2004]

180 Night Watch

We like a bit of crazy here at Spoiler Filled and Russian director Timur Bekmambetov usually delivers just the kind of weird we like. But perhaps his first international hit Nochnoy Dozor a.k.a Night Watch from 2004 is a little too much crazy for us to handle (despite someone actually having read the book for a change!)? There’s still plenty to enjoy in this slick looking movie however, such as: vampires, magicians, shape-shifters, parallel dimensions, blood curses, destructive crow tornadoes, living stuffed owls, creepy spider dolls and so much more we just don’t understand.

179: SFFCH – The Witches of Eastwick [1987]

178 Witches of Eastwick

Now we all like George Miller’s style here at Spoiler Filled (especially one of us *cough* Jamie *cough*), but how will he handle his first time directing something which isn’t Mel Gibson in a post apocalyptic wasteland? So, we’re taking a look at his first Hollywood outing with The Witches of Eastwick from 1987. Our expectations are all over the shop for this ‘feminist parable’ given Miller’s eclectic back catalogue, but we certainly all have something to say about this ahead-of-the-time movie. Expect some sexual cello playing, booby dolls, Rich playing Devil’s advocate (quite literally) and to never look at cherries the same way again.

178: SFFCH – Tucker & Dale Vs. Evil [2010]

179 Tucker and Dale

It’s not very often that a film based around a single joke is very successful, but perhaps Abi has found the exception to the rule in Tucker and Dale vs Evil, a comedy horror from 2010 which asks the question: What if those creepy-looking, horror-movie-redneck-serial-killer types are just really nice, misunderstood guys? We got a lotta love for Alan Tudyk, find Joss Whedon parallels and try not to over-explain too many jokes.

175: SFFCH – Serpico [1973]

175 Serpico

Abi was watching wrestling (of course) and thought of Al Pacino (obviously!), so this week the Spoiler Filled Crew are watching Serpico, a gritty slice of 70’s cinematic americana based on the life of cop, whistleblower and all-round cool dude Frank Serpico. This time around Abi herself is pressured into whistleblowing, Rich dreams of slapstick crossovers, Jamie keeps reminding us that everybody is dead and everyone marvels at the many, many beards of Al Pacino.

174: SFFCH – Repo Man [1984]

174 Repo Man

Jamie and Rich get their testosterone on this week talking about cars, punks, aliens, vaporisations, conspiracies and midnight movies as they discuss cult sci-fi comedy film Repo Man. Join them as they wonder what happened to Emilio Estevez, plant love and kisses on Harry Dean Stanton, the punk soundtrack, the ‘wackiness’ of it all and trust them to find the Welsh trash-lady reference.

171: SFFCH – Triangle [2009]

171 Triangle

171 SFFCH Triangle [2009]

Ant plucks out this cheap and standard looking horror film from deep down in the film bin this week called Triangle from 2009. Expectations are low from the poetically three-pointed panel of him, Rich and Jamie, but is there something more mysterious and mind-bending waiting in store for them. Come and join them all try and wrap their brains (and maybe intestines) around this twisty tale which includes such flotsam and jetsam as: slapstick axe-throwing, numerous Shining references, symbolic seagulls, perplexing paradoxes and surprisingly very little mention of the Bermuda Triangle, weirdly.

170: SFFCH – Dick Tracy [1990]

170 Dick Tracy

“Ooooo, look at all the pretty colours!” This, we highly suspect here at Spoiler Filled HQ, is how most people ended up watching this week’s film, the live-action adaptation of Dick Tracy from 1990. But perhaps we are soon to discover the hideous nature of the beast laying below. In this discussion, we discuss such things as: how there is such a distinguished cast in such a questionable movie, Madonna’s gangster voice, neon noir and all those god-damned melty faces.
