‘Spoiler Filled Film Conversation Hooray’ hasn’t been to animé land since ‘Summer Wars’, so it was a pleasure for the crew to watch Ant’s choice of ‘Paprika’ from 2006. Please listen in, as Rich, Ant, Abi and Jamie extol the virtues of this animation and momentarily forget all their over-critical tendencies! Yes, there are some issues of ‘style over substance’, and it is a Japanese mindbender, but it is one so strong on detail and content we may forgive few qualms we had. We have the usual forgetting of character names, but there is no forgetting the mistress of the spices Paprika. (Ep 69, Rec 2014)
068: SFFCH – The Adventures Of Priscilla, Queen Of The Desert
Shouldn’t the abbreviation for a film be easier to say than the actual title? Well, not with TAOPQOTD, but then there’s nothing really regular about this Australian road movie from 1994 involving two drag queens, one transexual and of course Priscilla herself, their fabulous bus (or was that ‘plot device’). Abi brings this one to the table, to the delight of Rich and Jamie who surprisingly for ‘Spoiler Filled’ can’t really find much wrong with it. Although we do discover basing your knowledge of Australia on road movies and soap operas is probably not the best representation. So come and enjoy the films well rounded characters, discussions of society’s gender roles and, of course, the glorious, glorious costumes.
N.B. Any film which can make Jamie appreciate ABBA is a big tick in our book.

067: SFFCH – Dredd
Yes, ‘Dredd’ is here, and his movie will be judged. Was it a crime to try again with this 2012 film? Jamie brings the question to the ‘Spoiler Filled Film Conversation Hooray’ court, and now Rich, Ant and Abi will make the verdict. Will it be thrown off the top of a building like everyone in it? As it turns out the whole jury liked it, leading to much shenanigans when they confusedly try to be negative and pull it apart out of sheer habit, but they do let if off. Be happy, people! Eventually, they settle on the good bits, which include Karl Urban’s chin, the bravery of being in a helmet all movie, the 3-D supposedly being actually good, the bravery of the villainous actress, the possibility of the Dredd bubble gun on slow days, the integration of a good female character into an action movie, and the straightforward and brisk storyline. Movie reprieved. (Ep 67, Rec 2014)
066: SFFCH – Orphans
This time the chosen movie for ‘Spoiler Filled Film Conversation Hooray’, is ‘Orphans’ from 1998. It’s by Peter Mullen, set in Glasgow, and is a British movie so expect some bleakness even in this comedy. Well, Rich chose it and says it’s a comedy so it must be! Join Rich and Abi and they chatter on about this subtle dark comedy, and its narrative encompassing the events surrounding the death of an elderly mother and the activities of her four orphaned adult children on the night before her funeral. Along the way, they also explain the Welsh word ‘twp’ and wonder just what was going on in that pub! (Ep 66, Rec 2014)
065: SFFCH – Clockwise
Have you ever wondered what the British equivalent of a ‘road movie’ might be? Of course it would be tiny, subtle and involve tractors and a monastary! Unfortunately that didn’t work for ‘Spoiler Filled Film Conversation Hooray’ as they bring in the 1986 movie ‘Clockwise’ at Ant’s behest. Join Rich and Ant as they talk through the movie’s story, and their own disappointments with the small scale of all things within. Is it too subtle? Too humdrum? Only there for middle class and middled aged Britain to connect with? Listen in or detention outside our office at ‘9:20’ (Ep 65, Rec 2014)
064: SFFCH – Harlem Nights
‘Harlem Nights’ is a 1989 movie dominated by Eddie Murphy, and it’s Jamie’s choice for this latest Spoiler Filled Film Conversation Hooray! Join Rich, Jamie, Abi and Ant as they talk their way through this film, which probably undeservedly won its Razzie Awards. Yes, Richard Pryor, Red Fox and Arsenio Hall (who even gets to kick Murphy’s ass) also appear in the movie. Load your Tommy gun and pop Trilby on it’s podcast time. (Ep 64, Rec 2014)
063: SFFCH – The Hand
This time on Spoiler Filled Film Conversation Hooray, horror or comedy takes the front stage as Abi brings in ‘The Hand’ from 1981, that Oliver Stone miracle of unintentional(?) horror satire. Rich, Abi and Jamie jabber on about Michael Caine (his hair is pretty wild in this film not just his missing hand), Bruce McGill (and his poncho), and substandard effects. What is there to say about about a disembodied hand creeping about in a dubiously scary horror movie? Loads! Listen and find out. (Ep 63, Rec 2014)
Blank-Mange: The Wizard Of Oz

062: SFFCH – Memoirs Of A Geisha
We’re going to be cultural now at the podcast HQ. Don’t be afraid. Spoiler Filled Film Conversation Hooray is proud to present its chat about 2005’s ‘Memoirs of a Geisha’, as chosen by Rich. Listen in as he, Abi, Ant and Jamie talk about the vagaries of this subset of Japanese history. Is the film too romanticised? Is it strange that such a movie isn’t based on a true story? What do the gang think of the geisha training montage? Is it more interesting when the villain is around, and then falls flat when World War II intervenes? Finally, is the whole General / Yuri relationship deeply creepy or is it just the mores of another culture in a different time? Pour your a deeply symbolic slush puppie and listen to us chat. (Ep 62, Rec 2014)
061: SFFCH – The Delta Force
Spoiler Filled Film Conversation Hooray this time takes on the myth, the legend, the joke format and actor Chuck Norris. Listen in as Rich, Ant and Abi express opinions on ‘The Delta Force’ from 1986, the movie spectacle that also encompasses the last film role of Lee Marvin. It’s a curious camel of a movie, essentially being a tense plane hijacking forced to merge with a dumb Norris action movie, with a professional Lee Marvin epilogue tacked on to the end. Rich is lured away by the mirage that would be a good Chuck Norris joke, Ant points out that you won’t see people being beaten with the arm of a chair anywhere else, and Abi points out the Nazi-analogue of the hijackers. Or something like that. Also the film feature Robert Foster and (fellow Robert) Robert Vaughn. (Ep 61, Rec 2014)
