118: SFFCH – My Dog Tulip

118 My Dog Tullip

Who doesn’t wanna talk about the toileting habits and sexual proclivities of dogs, am I right? I know we do. Join Abi and Rich as they talk about this animation from 2009 based on the memoir of writer J.R. Ackerley, recounting his relationship, in frank and explicit detail, with a rescue dog named Tulip. If you’re interested in hearing about poop, crotchety old men and/or Christopher Plummer, then this is one for you.

117: SFFCH – Razzle Dazzle

117 Razzle Dazzle

When someone told us we need a little more razzle dazzle here at Spoiler Filled we may have misunderstood, for Rich chooses 2007’s Razzle Dazzle: A Journey Into Dance, a mockumentary surrounding the world of competitive children’s dance troupes, for the scrutiny of Abi and himself. Another Australian produced film featured on the show; though it  does have a few British fingerprints all over it. So join the Spoiler Filled crew and Mister Jonathon’s Jazz-keteers as topics up for discussion include: Christopher Guest films, cutlery costumes, Rich’s inability to use the word ‘dance’ and how the film may be a little too realistic…

116: SFFCH – Matinee

116 Matinee

It’s 1993, The cold War is finally over and filmmakers are ready to talk about it. This week Jamie brings us Matinee, directed by one of his favorite (but not really favourite) family friendly horror comedy directors, Joe Dante. We do love a film about films here at Spoiler Filled, so join Jamie, Rich and Abi as they sit through this homage to old Hollywood ‘B’ Movies, as John Goodman plays a producer taking advantage of the atmosphere of fear surrounding the Cuban MIssile Crisis to promote his new, kitschy movie. Jamie remembers old painted movie posters, Abi finds it all a bit whimsical and Rich doesn’t get to use all his puns because Ant isn’t here.

And remember: It’s a B movie, It’s a B movie Show!

115: SFFCH – The Wrestler

115 The Wrestler

‘Turns out Abi likes Wrestling. Who’d have known!? Well, truth be told we all have our own little history with wrestling here at ‘Spoiler Filled’, so come join Abi, Rich and Jamie this time as they discuss the almost inevitable choice of ‘The Wrestler from 2008, a fictional tale of Randy ‘The Ram ‘ Robinson, a kind of amalgam  of all real-life superstar wrestlers from the ’80s, as he faces retirement from the ring. Be prepared for inordinate amounts of wrestling talk this time as the crew relate their own experiences with the sport/stunt show/soap opera, consider Mickey Rourke’s own comparable career to his character and discuss the parallels between wrestlers and strippers.

114: SFFCH – The Killing Of Sister George

114 The Killing of Sister George

Trust a male member of the crew to pick a film about lesbians! Though it may not be quite the kind of film you think. This time, Rich brings Abi and Ant some ‘proper’ lesbians with 1967’s ‘The Killing of Sister George’. Now it may sound like a western and it may look like a ‘ Carry On’, but trust us, it’s a completely different beast altogether. So come hear about the exploits of aging soap star June, a.k.a. George, and her relationship with partner Alice, a.k.a. Childie, as they deal with life and the interfering of TV producer Mrs. Croft, a.k.a Queen of the Cold Bitches. Topics include: awkward doll distractions, drunk acting appreciation, friendly neighbourhood prostitutes and discover why we don’t usually let Rich read the credits.

113: SFFCH – Death To Smoochy

113 Death to Smoochy

Robin Williams has been a bit of a regular at ‘Spoiler Filled’, ever since episode number 2 with the film ‘Toys’. This time around we take a slightly more analytical look at his work and his life as Jamie brings up for discussion the Danny DeVito directed ‘Death to Smoochy’ from 2002, a film about the absurd world of children’s Television. So in a (at times) surprisingly predictive satire that brings us fluffy purple rhinos, Irish mobsters, secret Nazi rallies and a seemingly endless string of bad guys, come and find out whether it’s funny Robin Williams or serious Robin Williams that we here at ‘Spoiler Filled’ prefer. And whether the film is any good too, of course. Prepare yourself also for an analogy overload at the end; they just keep coming…

112: SFFCH – 7 Faces Of Dr Lao

112 7 Faces of Dr Loa SF

What is Hollywood’s obsession with dressing up white people as other races? We’re all pretty sure here at ‘Spoiler Filled’ that people of all colours and creeds can act. We’ve seen ’em. It’s a difficult-to-avoid subject with Ant’s choice of film this week, 1964’s ‘Seven Faces of Doctor Lao’, as the first impressions of the title character leave us rubbing our heads in frustration, but luckily He, Rich, Abi and Jamie find plenty of other insanities to distract themselves with. We discover how playing multiple roles in a film should be done (are you listening Eddie Murphy!?), the surprisingly numerous Mary Poppins connections, some excellent makeup and effects for the time and a variety of strange characters including the most brutal fortune teller ever and the best/ most eager Mother in Law. So join us as we delve deeper in the psyche of Dr. Lao than possibly anyone should ever go and see which member reveals their own personal ‘seven faces’.

111: SFFCH – Shine

111 Shine SF

SFFCH – Shine

Daddy issues abound this time as we make a return visit to Australia here at ‘Spoiler Filled’ with the 1996 film ‘Shine’, which is based on the life of pianist David Helfgott and his on-going mental decline. Join Abi, Rich and Jamie as they debate the developing genre of ‘’Oscar-Bait ‘movies, marvel at how the film celebrates the ‘rockstar’ piano pieces and find the pun in the term ‘trampolining pianist’!

110: SFFCH – Three To Tango

110 Three to Tango SF

SFFCH – Three to Tango

Unfortunately we had to lock up Jamie in the ‘Spoiler Filled’ basement so we could have some poetic license this time around as the trio of Rich, Abi and Ant dance their way into 1999’s ‘Three to Tango’, a romantic comedy starring Matthew Perry and Neve Campbell. Now, romantic comedies are not really our forte here at ‘Spoiler Filled’ but it seems like Rich has chosen one we can all get behind, despite being as formulaic as all the rest. This time around we are surprised by the competitive cut-throat world of architecture, ponder whether ‘gay’ is contagious in the film and shamelessly mock Matthew Perry’s awfully 90’s haircut. Oh, you also best watch out for a…

109: SFFCH – Noroi, The Curse

109 Noroi The Curse SF

SFFCH – Noroi: The Curse

That’s it! ‘Spoiler Filled’ is getting a second home in Japan because we clearly can’t get enough of the place! This time it’s Jamie’s turn to delve into the country’s back catalogue and its notorious love for the horror genre, where he uncovers the suitably obscure ‘Noroi’ a.k.a. ‘The Curse’ from 2005.  There is some initial scepticism from Rich and Ant as they have been scorned by ‘found footage’ films in the past, but Japan has a special place in their hearts that they can’t help but relent. So join us this time around as we discuss whether the main character looks like a giant chubby baby, how non-filmic the film actually is, the wonderfully crazy tin-foil guy and more dead babies than Rich can handle.
