415: Wanted [2008] Movie Discussion

Yes, we know it’s really dumb. Yes, we know it’s pretty ‘out there’ and yes, we know that none of this should really work, but the planets and stars have really aligned to make Wanted an incredibly entertaining experience that we all get a kick out of here at at SFFCH. So come and listen as we finally gel with director Timur Bekmambetov’s unique style of craziness in a movie involving: bullet bending, supernatural weaving machinery, Lazarus pits, magical assassins, skyscraper vaulting, rat bombs and so, SO much more!

371: Hitman [2007] Movie Discussion

Oh no! It’s another video game adaptation. Why do we do this to ourselves? To be honest, we’re just glad to watch Timothy Olyphant playing something other than a grizzled sheriff type. Hitman came out in 2007, to our surprise as it does feel like a 90’s movie, and follows the exploits of Agent 47, the most conspicuous, bald-headed, barcode-tattooed assassin dealing with double crossings, his asexuality, fake Russian Presidents, turning people into bombs and doing all this while forgetting the streak of humour the games do so well.

366: Batman Returns [1992] Movie Discussion

Merry Merry Time. Cold season had set in and its time for our suitably odd Christmas Time podcast. We have moved on from wrestlers and horror Christmas movies (well, more or less) and have landed on Batman Returns. Trust us, Christmas is all over this movie with Tim Burton’s macabre, gothic and wacky style at it’s peak, making this film a new one we think you should add to your annual Christmas binge. In our plentiful sack of movie nonsense this week, be prepared for: giant ducks, rocket launcher penguins, cold soup, thin batmobiles, death by electric snogging and a few too many lecherous quips than we can handle.

336: The Adventures of Robin Hood [1938] Movie Discussion

How even do you buckle a swash? This week on SFFCH we jump into the fray of the Technicolor marvel that is The Adventures of Robin Hood from 1938. Be prepared for an excess of tights, stunts and haughty laughter in this classic epic as well as such curiosities as: awkward mace wielding, super-speed flailing swords, lots of meat-eating, escaping from crowds too often, thinking not much of Much and Robin Hood really walking the line between rascally scamp and full on asshole.

326: Hanna [2011] Movie Discussion

Rich is always a bit wary of teenage assassin stories, but maybe he can get behind Hanna, a Euro-hopping action thriller from 2011. But then again, maybe not. It’s an odd mix of Jason Bourne style action with coming of age aspects and lots of fairy-tale imagery and whilst it gets a little silly in parts it has a banging soundtrack. Will it win over the crew? Tune in to find out.

305: The Punisher [1989] Movie Discussion

Back in 1989, comic book movie adaptations were struggling to show their potential. That is until they released a dark, exciting, action-packed blockbuster about a brooding vigilante. That film was Batman, but we’re not here to talk about that. We’re here to talk about The Punisher, released in the same year, a movie that certainly doesn’t hit the heights of it’s comic book counterpart, but is there still some entertainment in there for the Spoiler Filled Crew? Tune in to find out in our discussion involving: driving motorcycles in sewer tunnels, painted on stubble, remote-controlled booze, rhyming sidekicks, over the top mafia impressions, deadly earring projectiles and quite the variety of ridiculous deaths.

268: Romancing The Stone [1984] Movie Review

268 Romancing The Stone
This week Abi was hoping for a nostalgic flirtation with an old childhood favourate as she brings Romancing the Stone, an action-adventure romance movie, to the table. However, it seems a little more experience in the adventure genre over the years has revealed the flaws in this one. The crew are underwhelmed by Robert Zemeckis’ early action attempts, remember that Danny Devito is funny and short, wonder how many villain stereotypes can be wrapped up in one person and go on a weirdly long tangent on the beauty of the Welsh population.

Also, R.I.P Kirk Douglas, this podcast was recorded just before his passing.

248: Live Like A Cop, Die Like A Man [1976]

248 Live like a Cop Die like a Man

We are ready for a bit of Mediterranean flavour this week as we tackle another film produced in Italy. Italy is considered as the birthplace of Art cinema, famous for it’s Neo-realism movement, it’s subversive Spaghetti Westerns and, judging by this weeks film, it’s terribly exploitative and misogynistic crime movies. Live Like A Cop, Die Like A Man follows the exploits of the inaptly named Fred and Tony, two trigger happy and a-little-bit-too-rapey cops who are apparently trying to take down a local crime boss, but mostly seem to be: slapping clothes off of women, making people bleed acrylic blood, burning various vehicles and going around being a little bit too heterosexual.

246: Mad Max [1979] Movie Review

246 Mad Max.jpg

It finally happened. We let Jamie gush about Mad Max directly and not have to skirt around another movie to do so. This dystopian, pre-post apocalyptic, revenge action movie stands a little apart from the other entries in the Mad Max franchise as their is still a semblance of normal society before it descends into the apocalyptic insanity of the latter movies. What will the Crew make of one of Jamie’s most formative films? Tune in to find out! N.B. As with most Australian films we touch upon here, be ready for plenty of silly accents from the Spoiler Filled Crew.

220: SFFCH – The Driver [1978]

220 Driver

If you’re looking for film that epitomizes ‘cool’ then The Driver from 1978 may be the film for you. However, is this neo-noir thriller going to prove the theory that just because you’re cool doesn’t necessarily mean you have any substance. We all have slightly differing views this week on a film that was somewhat despised in it’s day, but is starting to show it’s influence on film and video games 40 years on. This time we focus on: fewer (but longer) car chases than we expect, Bruce Dern being Bruce Dern, humorous car demolition, 70’s “style” and getting confused somehow by the very simple plot.
