226: SFFCH – Prince Of Darkness [1987]

This week Rich, Abi and Jamie pour over Jamie’s pick of Prince Of Darkness – where Jesus was an alien, the Devil is locked in a mirror universe and the Devil’s son is a large tub of neon, green ooze. Oh Jamie, where do you find these things?

There’s also demonic pregnancy via knocking your elbow, Alice Cooper as a some kind of king of the homeless swarm and the mind-blowing revelation that John Carpenter may have been making all of this shit up while he was off his tits on drugs. We never would have guessed.

193: SFFCH – Dark Star [1974]

This week we set our sights on what is considered one of the best student films ever created….No wait! Come back listeners! This is not your usual student film full of hokey acting, cheap sets and bad special effects….well, not too much of it anyways. Not when the student in question is John Carpenter! Dark Star is the expanded version of Carpenter’s original student film about four men on a deteriorating spaceship in deep space going a bit loopy. Beach-ball aliens, makeshift musical instruments, philosophizing bombs and surfing on space debris are all highlights in this original and off-beat concept.

152: SFFCH – Big Trouble in Little China

We have had our brushes with ‘obscure’ John Carpenter in the past, but this time we’re going all out with ‘classic’ John Carpenter as we charge on into the weird labyrinth that is Big Trouble in Little China from 1986. It’s a true-to-form midnight movie nostalgia-thon for most of the crew this week, but one of us has some dissenting words. Come and listen to whom bucks the trend in a film about fighting in various rooms, weird classic Hollywood impressions, nightmare fuel monsters that are barely seen and every vaguely Asian-looking actor Hollywood could muster in the 80’s.
