On this occasion ‘Spoiler Filled Film Conversation Hooray’ is left in a strange daze due to 1995’s ‘Strange Days’. Rich, Jamie, Ant and Abi discuss this cyber film noir by the mysterious axis of Kathryn Bigelow and James Cameron. The movie does start off with the veritable bucket-load of setup. Points of interest include the mystery of whether 1999 was secretly like ‘Strange Days’, minidiscs evil craziness, the presence of literal backstabbings, the de-wigging of Tom Sizemore and the comparative lack of special effects. If any of this sounds interesting then listen in. (Ep 79, Rec 2014)
078: SFFCH – The Brave Little Toaster Goes To Mars
This time on Spoiler Filled Film Conversation Hooray, it’s time to get back to the Brave Little Toaster universe in the third film in the franchise ‘The Brave Little Toaster Goes to Mars’ from 1998. It’s Rich’s choice, so listen in as he, Abi, Jamie and Ant chatter on about something extremely and oddly bad. Yes, there may be the novelties of Farrah Fawcett playing a faucet, Wayne Knight being microwave/sort of spaceship engine, the villain being one of Einstein’s hearing aids, and this being DeForest Kelley’s final acting role but was it any good? Listen in to find out. Also will the Spoiler Filled Crew ever return to the toaster trilogy for the missing instalment aka ‘Brave Little Toaster to the Rescue’? Will the poor quality animation destroy the world before the giant fridge’s Martian military toasters do the job? Who Knows?
Note: There are some minor sound quality issues for this recording, sorry about that. (Ep 78, Rec 2014)
077: SFFCH – F/X 2
Ant had a plan. First he would get everyone to watch ‘F/X: The Art Of Illusion’ for a podcast, and then he would spring the sequel on them as the topper! Spoiler Filled Film Conversation Hooray, and on this occasion deals with the film ‘F/X 2: The Deadly Art Of Illusion’ from 1991. Join Rich, Ant and Abi as they chat over the cinematic fluff and oddities of this cult classic. We’re using ‘classic’ in the negotiable sense. Oh, the quaint computer clichés, the weirdness of having a private bar, a maddeningly long revenge plan and a mandatory wrestling reference all combine to make this a very spoiler filled chat indeed. Also, there’s mashed potato snow, a hotdog gun and a remote control submarine. WTF? (Ep 77, Rec 2014)
076: SFFCH – Muriel’s Wedding
Welcome to Spoiler Filled Film Conversation Hooray, where on this occasion Rich, Abi and Ant are talking about ‘Muriel’s Wedding’ from 1994. Huzzah! It’s all thematic, if you’re in the know. So, listen in for the chatter about this oddball Australian romantic comedy / tragedy / drama of no fixed tone. Are there better ways to spend stolen money? Probably. Is the film only separated from being something very dark by a thin line of comedy? What’s with her changing her name from Muriel to Mariel? Australian movies don’t follow Hollywood rules, and we say good onya Aussies. (Ep 76, Rec 2014)
075: SFFCH – The Road To Wellville
Spoiler Filled Film Conversation Hooray strikes again, and this time the crew are talking about 1994’s ‘The Road To Wellville’. Was Jamie’s choice grrrrreat? You’ll have to listen to get the details, but in general they didn’t seem to like it. Listen in as Rich, Jamie and Abi converse on various facets of the movie, including the manic Anthony Hopkins, Kellogg’s Cornflakes, the museum of antiquated health spa devices, early electric blankets(?), the lack of a character to like, Colm Meaney being dark, the resemblance to a terrible 70s sex comedy, and the insufficient irony in Kellogg’s death. Oh, why couldn’t they have drowned him in cornflakes? It would have been so meaningful! (Ep 75, Rec 2014)
074: SFFCH – The Pope Must Die
‘The Pope Must Die’: What a rich title for a comedy that never comes close to matching its own name. Welcome to ‘Spoiler Filled Film Conversation Hooray’, and to Rich’s latest choice. Join him, Jamie and Abi as they discuss this ‘Comic Strip Presents’ flavoured movie, and try to work out just which bits are supposed to be funny. That was one of the chores with alternative comedy of the time: Identifying the jokes. So, what do they talk about? Well, there’s Herbert Lom’s silver wig of disguise, the some terrible over-dubbing, haphazard and dead-ending subplots, and the complete absence of competent Pope jokes. Oh, what there might have been! At least it had Adrian Edmondson. (Ep 74, Rec 2014)
073: SFFCH – The Fall
Rich and Ant are alone in the Spoiler Filled recording vault once again, harkening back to the earliest days of ‘Spoiler Filled Film Conversation Hooray’ (when they did ‘Toys’ together), and this time they’re having a chat about Tarsem Singh’s 2006 movie ‘The Fall’ as brought in by Ant. It’s a rough listen though as Good Cop/Bad Cop comes into play with the two different verdicts on the movie. Still, people can always unite on the silly hats, beautiful locations, the film’s nature as a passion project, and on the value of a great child actor. What do you think, listeners? Are you on the extreme negative critical side with Rich, on team appreciation with Ant, or lurking somewhere in the middle? (Ep 73, Rec 2014)
072: SFFCH – Grand Theft Parsons
This time on ‘Spoiler Filled Film Conversation Hooray’, it’s Abi’s turn to choose again, and so Michael Shannon makes another appearance! This time he’s appearing in ‘Grand Theft Parsons’ from 2003, a pseudo-true life tale about the cremation pact between Byrds singer Gram Parsons and his manger. Join Rich, Abi and Jamie as they talk about the mighty Shannon, Johnny Knoxville, the ongoing mildness of being in ‘Grand Theft Parsons’, and wonder just what kind of name ‘Gram’ is anyway. If none of that is enough then there’s cactus talk and novelty hearse chat. (Ep 72, Rec 2014)
071: SFFCH – Doom
‘Doom’! ‘Doom’! It’s ‘Doom’ from 2005 on ‘Spoiler Filled Film Conversation Hooray’ Yes, Rich, Jamie and Abi watched ‘Doom’, the poor people. They’ll get therapy the ‘Spoiler Filled’ way via repeated watching of ‘Dredd’ until all is well again. If you choose to listen in you’ll find some admiration for Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson, some speculation on why most of the characters monster-ise and some turn into superheroes, notes on exceptionally poor alien autopsy hygiene procedure, the sudden end, a need for it to go all the way to parody-land instead of hanging about in the middle ground and utmost dissatisfaction on all sides. The clue was in the name. (Ep 71, Rec 2014)
070: SFFCH – Rock-A-Doodle
Rich has brought in ‘Rock-a-Doodle’ from 1991 for a grand ‘Spoiler Filled Film Conversation Hooray’ chat. Will one of his childhood favourite survive the scrutiny or will Rich, Abi, Jamie and Ant let the film be devoured by hungry evil owls as punishment for being too terrible and an incomprehensible mess? Lots to talk about as the film feature a host of cartoon animals dressed as other animals, an Elvis impersonating rooster, a naïve farm boy who turns into cat (and yet wears a hat made out of a dead raccoon) and a whole bunch of other crazy mad stuff for us to wrap our brains around. If you wish hard enough and shout ‘Chantecler!’ loud enough the podcast might play itself or just click play. (Ep 70, Rec 2014)
