In a response to Steven Speilberg’s schmalzy-ness, we go back and watch his first film Duel, a tense chase thriller between a man and a dirty truck. For such a ‘simple’ film we find we have a lot of complex things to say about masculinity/emasculation as well as slightly less complex things to say about: annoying bus children, gas station-cum-exotic zoos and ineffectual manspreading.
