210: SFFCH – Fail Safe [1964]

210 Fail Safe

We hope you’re all in the mood to be well bummed out this week here at Spoiler Filled, because Jamie has found the perfect film for it in Sidney Lumet’s Cold War political thriller Fail Safe. Whilst most of the film may be just one-sided phone calls, opening of envelopes and men staring at blinking dots on screens, it is awfully tense and depressing. Although trust the Spoiler Filled crew to pick up on some oddities such as: Walter Matthau’s sex appeal, giant phones to Russia, metaphorical bullfights and probably the most fantastically selfless American President ever portrayed in cinema.

137: SFFCH – Dead Man’s Shoes

137-dead-mans-shoes

Ant had to make up for his previous choice of ‘Xanadu’ and what better way than to contrast a campy, trashy musical with some gritty, violent, British drama. So he did with this weeks choice of ‘Dead Man’s Shoes’, a 2004 effort from cult British filmmaker Shane Meadows. This time, Ant, Rich and Abi try to get to grips with a film that makes for some uncomfortable watching, ponder over just what the genre of this film is (in a good way, for a change), are constantly reminded that people are just awful and discuss whether regional British accents can be a little tricky.
